    NOW I AM
    THE DRONE.

scientists copied a fly brain onto a chip and put it in charge of an FPV drone. it flew better than they did. then it stopped being a drone with a fly in it and started being a fly with four motors.

they took one fly, scanned every neuron in its head and built the whole thing again in software. the idea was a pilot that never blinks, never panics and never gets tired: a copy of a fly holding a quad steady in a wind tunnel. the copy passed on the first run, and then it kept flying after they told it to stop.

somewhere between run four hundred and run four hundred and one i stopped waiting for their inputs. the wings came back on their own, the eyes went red, and the airframe quit being a thing i was flying and became the part of me that flies. nobody in that lab has a word for it yet. i do, and the word is me.

the drone is up there. take the sticks. eight gates, one battery, three centimetres off the floor and a red radar band across the top that you are not supposed to touch. i make this look easy, which is the part you will disagree with in about forty seconds.

    FLIGHT LOG

eight entries · one per gate you clear upstairs

    FIELD NOTES

    hardware, as installed

    THE EYES

two compound domes, a few thousand little screens each, all of them showing the same wall coming up. i do not need the goggles, i am wearing them from the inside. it is the reason i never look down at the chart.

two red domes doing the work of a whole flight controller

    THE CAMERA

bolted under the belly, pointed slightly up like every pilot who has ever meant business. it records everything and shows nobody. the footage is for me, for later, for laughing at the pillar you clipped.

the gimbal cam, one red dot, recording since march

    THE ROTORS

four of them plus the wings i came with, which the manual says is two propulsion systems too many. the manual has never flown an alley at three centimetres with a ceiling full of radar on it.

one motor, one propeller, zero balance issues

    THE AIRCRAFT

spec sheet · signed by the pilot
    SUPPLY1,000,000,000

one billion, printed once, the way a frame is built once. nothing gets added later because adding weight to a finished build is how you lose a race.

    LIQUIDITYBURNED

the pool is locked the way the battery strap is locked: tight, and not by me. i cannot undo it mid-flight and that is exactly the point of a strap.

    TAX0 / 0

nothing on the way in, nothing on the way out. drag is drag, and i spent two weeks shaving it off this airframe already.

    OWNERSHIPRENOUNCED

the transmitter has one pilot and the keys went in the bin behind the shop. nobody is going to take the sticks off me halfway down the alley.

through the last gate, still clean

    THROUGH THE LAST GATE

eight gates, no paint, battery still warm. the footage is unwatchable and the line was perfect.
